5 who contributed to education earn honors from USD

LINDA VISTA – The University of San Diego School of Leadership and Education Sciences will honor five people as Remarkable Leaders in Education at a ceremony in November.

Remarkable Leaders was started last year to recognize local people who have made a significant impact on learning from pre-kindergarten through college locally and nationally.

This year's winners are:

Dede Alpert, a former state senator who was chairwoman of the Joint Committee to Develop a Master Plan for Education.

Brian Bennett, a former principal and teacher who helped pioneer charter school development in the state.

The late King Durkee, a journalist who established the Newspapers in Education program.

Larry Rosenstock, chief executive and founder of High Tech High School.

The Rev. George Walker Smith, the first black member of the San Diego Unified School District board, who served four terms.

They will be honored Nov. 8 in Warren Auditorium in Mother Rosalie Hill Hall at USD.
