Streetlights restored along stretch of Park Boulevard in Balboa Park

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

October 8, 2008

THE PROBLEM: The heavily traveled stretch of Park Boulevard through Balboa Park is a bad place for a major streetlight malfunction.

Chuck Rickman, who drives the stretch before dawn each weekday from his home in University Heights, first noticed in August that dozens of streetlights along the median weren't working. The dark zone stretched from the Reuben H. Fleet Space Theater and Science Center to San Diego High School.

THE SITE: Park Boulevard, Balboa Park
Rickman felt particularly bad for workers who walk to the San Diego Naval Medical Center from the large parking lot at Presidents Way. “It was really dark along there,” he said.

He reported the problem to the city, but the outage persisted.

STATUS: At 11 a.m. Monday, Just Fix It called Gary Gobel, electrical public works superintendent for San Diego's Street Division, to ask if he knew about the lights being out. He promised to look into it.

At 3:17 p.m. the same day, he messaged back to say the problem had been solved.

An electrical malfunction – a burned splice – had cut power to about 40 streetlights, Gobel said.

WHO FIXED IT: Gary Gobel, who can be reached at ggobel@sandiego.gov. Requests for streetlight repairs can be submitted at (619) 527-7500 or apps.sandiego.gov/streetdiv.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem that government hasn't taken care of despite your complaints? Whether it's a missing bus bench or a misspelled street sign, Just Fix It might be able to help.

Complaint forms are at justfixit.uniontrib.com, or call (800) 820-8714.
